I went all out after using a $12 radio shack iron for 15 years. I got an Aoyue 9378 and it is quite luxurious. I sort of went over the top but if I keep it as long as the last one, that's like $5 a year.
Agreed, it is probably a good idea not to totally pinch the ends of the heatshrink closed on these. On a micro radio receiver, I do pinch it closed (when shrinking) sometimes.
If you are using multishot (or oneshot) you need to calibrate your ESC. Just do them all together, it's easy, takes about 10 seconds. Youtube has good videos on it.
Have a look at some soldering/desoldering videos on youtube. Also, it can help to a little practice on an old circuit board. But don't worry, you will get it. If it doesn't get easy fast, you can mail it to one of us. :D
I have only used PLA, TPU, and a tiny bit of ABS. TPU has been the most useful material to me for quads. It is awesome stuff, very soft but super strong. It's expensive, but the stuff I print with it is small.
Be careful rewiring those motors. The copper wire that looks bare has a special enamel coating for motor winding. It is best to splice an inch or so away if you can and don't apply heat for very long. I bet one could easily fry four motors and 2 4-in-1 ESC's that way. Don't ask me how I...
