Cetus X flew away

Just bought my 15 year old the betafpv cetus X. He spent several hours on the simulator and spent some time flying it indoors to get used to it. We took it outside on a completely windless day. He hovered it just like inside. Then it took off into the sky, straight up and to the right. No matter what he pressed, it wouldn't come down or turn. It went straight into a forest and now it's lost.
Looking for a replacement and just the drone is as expensive as the whole kit.
I also don't want to get another one and lose it the same way. So I'm trying to understand what happened and how to prevent it from happening again. Anyone have any tips or thoughts?

I had not heard of that brand before, so I looked it up on amazon and among other red flags I notice that it is a "frequently returned item" with poor reviews. Also, if you read the description of the drone, there are a number of instances of poor grammar, which often indicates a poor quality seller.
In essence, if you are going to buy another drone, just get a better brand. I would check with the seller and let them know what happened and see if they have fly away coverage.....it must have been discouraging, I hope you do better with the next one...also, FPV is difficult, even for people who have and fly camera drones....maybe get a camera drone for the 15 year old to start off with
