Is GPS necessary on a fpv drone?

Hello, as a beginner looking to buy a BNF, I was just wondering if buying a BNF with GPS is necessary.
I personally feel that I could easily lose where I was, if I was flying in some area with terrain that looks largely the same I could lose where my drone was. I personally do not want that to happen as FPV drones are very expensive.
I just want some people to share their experience on if GPS was necessary or they have other ways of making sure they know where their drone is, and for the GPS failsafe.

Necessary no, helpful yes, if you are flying within LOS, however if you are planning on long range it is a must. Just keep in mind that you will not get a fully configured gps unit even on bnfs that come equipped with gps unit from the factory and you will need to configure it yourself, not really plug and play.
